Janet for many years was a self employed Interior Designer. She changed career in mid-life and became an Interior Designer of a different kind. She left the grey skies of North Yorkshire and came to London to train as a Transpersonal Psychotherapist at the Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy Education in West London. Her inspiration for this change of career came in her 30's after reading 'The Road Less Travelled' (Scott Peck's seminal work on love and spiritual growth.) She too aspired to be a spiritual psychotherapist and to see that the way we face our difficulties and suffering can lead to spiritual growth.
Janet is now an experienced Transpersonal Psychotherapist and embraces wholeheartedly Scott Peck's vision 'The fact that there exists beyond ourselves and our conscious will a powerful force that nurtures our growth and evolution is enough to turn our notions of self-insignificance topsy-turvy. For the existence of this force (once we perceive it) indicates with incontrovertible certainty that our human spiritual growth is of the utmost importance to something greater than ourselves.'
After her training in the 'talking cure' with a spiritual bias, she wanted to address some of the stress she was still experiencing in her life. It seemed a natural progression to train in Autogenic Therapy probably the most effective non-drug technique ever developed in the West for dealing with stress and which integrated mind, body and spirit. Autogenic Therapy uniquely filled this niche by offering simple exercises to establish mental contact with the body's involuntary processes and thus releasing us from identifying solely with our mind. Autogenic Therapy is simply self generated healing which we can all learn to do in only eight sessions. It is a tool for life and also helps and heals both physical and psychological problems.
Life however was still dealing out some pretty hard cards at this point and it seemed necessary to look even further than the unconscious workings of just the mind and the body. To understand better some of her own life predicaments and seeming difficulties she turned to the work of Bert Hellinger and Trans-Generational Healing. Janet has now trained in Systemic Constellations Work with Dr. Albrecht Mahr, Professor Franz Ruppert, and Vivian Broughton and studied with Bert Hellinger.
Systemic theories show us the interconnectedness of all beings, through the systemic fields in which we live and the unconscious forces in the system. Thus the script that an individual often follows describes the fate of the family member with whom he is entangled, under the influence of the family conscience.
Through her own personal difficulties and pain she has found a way through systemic constellation therapy of working with resolutions instead of problems and taking oneself beyond the limited viewpoint of our difficulties as being just individual. She is author of 'Psychosis in the Family: The Journey of a Psychotherapist and Mother', an alternative title could be 'How and Why I Became a Constellation Therapist.'
Janet's practice now consists of Constellation, Transpersonal and Autogenic Therapy. She has been running Family / Systemic group weekend workshops at the CCPE since 2006. She is currently researching and writing her second book on constellation therapy. She is a member of the UK Council for Psychotherapy and Counselling Editorial Board, working with Karnac to combine excellence in Psychotherapy and Counselling.
